I did a lot of research on the internet and watched every detector video I could find on utube. I narrowed the choice down to the escort 9500ix and the redline. I was impressed with the gps capability of the 9500ix that can use gps location to eliminate false detections. However, I also wanted the extended detection range of the redline unit. I bought them both and tried them for 2 weeks. My driving consists of 100 miles a day, of which 6 of those miles are city miles. Within a couple of days, the 9500ix had most of the false detections screend and muted for the city driving, which amounted to apx 4 false detections. However, it could not match the detection range of the redline on the highway. The redline was picking up pop signals 8 miles out, and did just as well in detecting from the front or rear. One friday evening I was clocked 4 times by radar, and once by laser on a 75 miles trip. I got my first audible alert for laser before I could actually see the sideways parked car off the road a mile ahead with a gun aiming out the window. I immediately braked and had no problem. I was also picking up instant on / off being used on cars miles before I saw them. A trooper was coming up behind me with his radar on, and again it detected him well before we saw each other. I keep this unit mounted low to the dash to make sure I have the best chance of picking up laser which is a tight beam aimed at your front tag or headlight. I guess you really get what you pay for. I have owned 4 units over the years and this one is awesome. It also works fine with false detections in the city. I can switch it to auto/no x, and 99% of the false signals are filtered out. For the remaining 1%, I just press the mute button on the power cord that plugs in on my console. I would rather do a quick mute, and keep the unit on highway mode for max range. I also like the way you can run with all the warning lights out and use the warning light on the power cord next to the mute / volume adjust button on the plug in.

You said you were clocked by Radar and Laser…it wasn’t the Redline that detected the Laser correct? You have a separate Jammer for that? Are the items that detect radar/jam/are invisible to the Spectre?

@beanman Radar detectors suck at laser, buy the time it alerts you your already got, that is why you need a separate laser jammer
The Spectre is an RDD, detects radar detectors. There are only a few that can beat it, STi, Redline, 9500ix

          Roy,
I see here you replyed to someone back on May 8, 2011 saying that “The Spectre is an RDD, detects radar detectors. There are only a few that can beat it,STi, Redline,9500ix.” I thought the 9500ix was detectable by RDD’s. Unless I misread something a while back when determaining which detector to get. I look forward to hearing from you. I respect your opinions on detectors a lot!

          Sincerely,
          Matthew Summerhill

I just wanted to stop in and say thanks to radar roy! I switched from driving a suv to a sedan and had a bit of a leadfoot as a result.. it cost me a steep ticket. Frustrated by the circumstances and outcome of the ticket, I revisited buying a radar detector to make myself a more aware driver. I’ve had it one week and has already saved my skin 3 times! Today it picked up I/O Ka from a shade over a mile away. I circled back to see what kind of detection id get for front facing and it was very good! The officer saw me coming up behind him and switched to constant on and started to follow me but I knew right where he was no matter how far back he was. The road I approached the officer on was the kind of road that is a grade A speed trap. Other nearby roads similar are 45 zones and this is a 35 zone. After he gave up on trying to catch me speeding I went home and detected a front facing k band radar trailer from about 1/3 of a mile away. I run with x off k on ka on pop off sws off laser on and tsr off. Thanks for the great site where I did all of my research! Your reviews and videos helped me make a really great buy! I know its around $499 but my one ticket that I had cost me more than half that up front and I still need to pay higher insurance and recurring fees. Just spend the money and drive smarter. I wish I did sooner.

Just have to say, the Redline is the best radar detector I have owned. I have bought several over the years and I will never sell this one. I have picked up a state trooper running instant on over 5 miles. The detection range is so good, I think that the detector is falsing but a couple miles down the road, here comes the LEO. Did a laser jammer test the other day, it picked up laser at or about the same time as my Blinder M27. It has a TSR mode to filter out false alerts and it is RDD proof, so if you live in Virginia, you could illegally have this and the police would never know. I have owned the 8500,8500×50, solo 2 and V1 and this detector by far will run all of them in the ground. V1’s arrows are cool but it false alerts a lot. Watch youtube and compare the videos yourself, you get what you pay for! Bought mine for $380.00 on ebay listed for $469.00. Just think, a speeding ticket cost about that much….you do the math. Go buy an escort redline, you will not regret it.

LONG time Escort user and I just have to say that the range on the Redline is mind-boggling. By far, the best radar detector I have ever owned. I also tried the 9500ix before getting the RL, but the range just does not compare. I honestly can’t even complain about the false alerts either. Although the majority of my commute is rural, I do live in the suburbs and do go into urban areas quite often so I am driving past auto doors, etc frequently, and I don’t think the falses are overly frequent. You won’t be disappointed with the Redline.

I have to say escort makes one of the best radar detectors on the market. The redline has awesome K,Ka and X band range. I drive with a escort redline and it has saved me so many times from radar threats from local police here in Atlanta. It has the longest range of any radar detector and cannot be detected by the Spectre 4 which is a radar detector detector unit that virginia state police carry. I would recommend this radar detector for anyone who is just tired of getting pulled of by police. Don’t find yourself on the road without a redline!!

My previous radar detector was a Bel 940 and this is by far light years ahead of sensitivity and options. Sometimes I would spot the LEO before my 940 would even go off. Maybe the LEO had I/O going. But after getting the Redline the range is incredible. I even drive through a mid size city and it doesn’t give me too many falses to be annoying. I’m just glad it’s going to alert me to the real thing. If you plan on buying a top of the line Radar detector, this is it stop looking, unless of course you want the hidden radars. But for me this is nice since I can transport it between cars.

    Hello Radar Roy,

it would have been ideal to have the best of both worlds, meaning a 9500ix for its database with the capabilities of the redline for its stealth and longer range. Since this is not to be I would like to know, of the two which would u recommend as the more important one to choose. I live in Connecticu Thanks for ur answer.

Does stealth benefit drivers outside of Virginia or DC? Do police in other states carry radar detector detectors? Do they know if you have one non-stealth or do they care? Last question, are the false alarms with Redline significantly more than with the Passport 9500ix?

If you drive a commercial vehicle stealth is VERY important as radar detectors are illegal and truck enforcement do have Spectres. If you’re not driving in VA/DC and not driving a commercial vehicle then no, stealth is not important

I completely disagree with the opinion on disregarding stealthing your RD if you do not live or drive in VA or the Greater Washington DC Metro area.
Term definition: RDDs = Radar Detector Detectors
Stealthing your RD from RDDs, especially Stealth Microsystems, Pty. Ltd.’s latest Spectre IV+ technology — typically encountered as the Spectre ELITE model, is very important. I have been informed by my law enforcement contacts that many more states are using RDDS, especially as states that have been using them are starting to sell their older Spectre units to other valid law enforcement agencies. Additionally, as police agencies meet at various conventions all over North America, info is being shared. Due to budget shortfalls many states are considering using RDDs to increase revenue. I will detail this, being as concise as possible.
Typically, the target is commercial drivers. Catching them with an RD is a big fine, plus studies show that speeding commercial drivers are over 10 more likely to be involved in an accident, with greater increases in fatalities.
The other part of enforcement and revenue generation is a 3-fold approach. First, police use unmarked patrol vehicles. To really catch speeders off guard, many states are using confiscated vehicles, such as high-end SUVs, Mercedes, Lexus, Corvette, and even (in FL) some Ferraris. They find speeders and with Spectre RDDs pinpoint those with active RDs in their vehicle. No RD can defeat being paced by an unmarked patrol vehicle with a calibrated and certified speedometer. That is the 2nd part of the approach — to teach those speeding with an RD that they are not invincible and the tickets given generate lots of revenue. The 3rd part of the approach is that stopping speeders using an RD may yield someone with other violations or trafficking in contraband. That leads to felony arrests and vehicle confiscations. Vehicle will be sold at public auction, thus generating even more revenue, or recycled into unmarked patrol vehicle service for those states that do so — thus reducing capital expenditures with tax money.
I respectfully request that Radar Roy research this, as I know that a number of states are actively using RDDs for such purposes, even in states where RDs are legal.

@Road Warrior, 1st thank you for your post and I do not disagree with you on one item, so I am confused where you may have thought that I wasn’t recommending a stealth radar detector for commercial drivers.

            Hi Roy,

I realize this is an old thread, but think that “Road Warrior” makes an interesting point. Where I think he was disagreeing with you is with regards to if a stealth RD is important in a non-commercial vehicle. We all agree that if you are a commercial driver the stealth RD is a no-brainer. I like many are torn between the redline and the 9500ix (PS I used to think that Valentine was the best bar none until I found your website). Most of my driving is non-highway so I was leaning toward the 9500ix….however based on the above comments about being paced by an unmarked car maybe the redline is the way to go and just deal with the false alerts when they come up.

            Ugh….The decisions!

My wife and I just purchased 2 new German cars, one a sports sedan, the other a roadster. The roadster will be my wife’s main transportation to and from work, 22 miles one way – 20 of that the NYS thruway. She’s using an older Escort Passport 7500, but it’s time to upgrade. I, on the other hand, do mostly around-town driving with the occasional 150 mile trip to Atlantic City. We both like to drive above the speed limit and that’s what I’m afraid of with my wife and this new car. What are your suggestions on radar detectors for both cars and drivers? We are thinking of the Escort Redline or the Escort 8500 x50.

ps. I was on the job (36 years) until recently. I really never felt like I needed to use a radar detector so I don’t know much about them.

For the highway driving, I would suggest the Redline. However, if you are going to be buying separate detectors, I would suggest the 9500ix for city driving.

I live in California, and I commute about 15 miles on the highway a few times a week, but other than that, all of my driving is rural. I really like that the Redline will pick signals up well in advanced, but I don’t know if that would be the smart choice for my daily driving. Should I go with a 9500ix, or a Redline?

        Hey Radar Roy,

I know this is an old thread, but . . .
I have a Bel RX65 (bought from you about 8 years ago) set up to detect Ku. I live in Colorado Springs and I do occasionally pick up LEO’s using Ku band radar. I have picked up Ku mainly in the Denver area also–I think–being used by military police at the Air Force Academy. I’m not driving on Academy grounds with the RD (which is against federal law) but I sometimes pick up Ku band radar near the Academy’s entrance gates.

        I love what you do!!
My trusty RX65 has saved by backside numerous times–haven’t had a single ticket since I got it. But, it is starting to wear out, so I will be ordering something new soon.

            Roy, you are the expert
so I defer to your greater wisdom.
However, my RX65 is set up to detect multiple threats and display the strength of the target signal. False alarms from stores, etc, are usually very weak, registering a “1” or “2” at most. Real LEO targets are very strong starting at a 4 or 5 and going quickly to a 9 as they are nearer.

I don’t know what they are, but the Ku signals I have observed do not appear to be false and are usually in the 7 to 9 range in strength.

I have about settled on ordering an Escort iQ–which I notice is one of the few that still has Ku detection. Proba

Just purchased the Redline, drove about 200 miles on the interstate along with a buddy of mine who has another radar detector. We drove along on the phone talking to each other and once he said why are you slowing down? His radar detector was a good 5 to 8 seconds behind mine on almost every hit. One time he never even got an alert and it was a State Trooper setting above the freeway on an overcross. Thanks to Radar Roy and his excellent reviews!

Here is a little suggestion however, NEVER have two radar detectors operating at the same time on the dash as they can interfere with each other. The harmonics from the detectors being so close to each other could interfere with each other,

The Redline is a radar detector and will detect radar. However there are many photo enforcement that do NOT use radar, they use embedded sensors in the roadway. As I am not familiar with the cameras there I would suggest finding out if they are using sensors or radar.

If you’re in a rural, open highway environment you’re going to very pleased with the results. Back when I first started driving, in the 90’s, I started with a Uniden, Junk!! As time went on I tried out my friends V1, which he got in 2008, loved it, thought there was nothing better until I purchased the Redline. This thing is the shizzz. Blew the V1 away, especially on Ka band. If you could add an extra antenna for rear radar detection, directional arrows like the V1, and make a remote out of it, I couldn’t tell you how much money I would be willing to spend to get one. Amazing !!!

Like everyone else i am not sure which one to pick from: Escort Passport 9500ix or the Escort Redline! Sometime ago i purchased the Cheetah C50 for the red light and speed cameras. My driving is about even between the city and highway. Redline sounds like the one i should purchased because of the better range than the 9500ix plus the fact that i have the C50 but worried about the false alerts in the city. Live in Milwaukee and there is a lot of radar traps in the city! Same on the highway! Which would you chose?

@ James Black – Tough question as you do drive both Highway and City. Remember that false alerts are the chief complaint of radar detector owners and if this is a concern with you, go with the 9500ix

    Hello Radar Roy.

Have you tested the STi Magnum? If not when do you think this may happen?
If you have tested the Magnum, how does it compare to the Red Line Escort
on your 5 mile Radar Detector Band Test?
Also, a couple a months ago I was told Beltronics is the owner of Escort Radars now.
I give you a 5 Star rating for having this Web Site. It along with the Internet, help me back in 2009 make a decision on the purchase of a STi Driver.

Hey Roy, I got zapped by POP mode, I was let off with a warning, I assume it has to do with my record (never even been pulled over). What I’m wondering is, do officers have access to who was pulled over if they weren’t given a ticket? I ask this because using the excuse of “first time even being pulled over” is always nice. The redline would have probably saved me in this case, however the roads weren’t very busy, so I’m not sure how helpful it would have really been anways.

    Roy,
I enjoy your insight on the traveling the roads today. What do you think about mounting the Redline by using the BlendMount rearview mirror system. The Blender has a m67-extreme custom system, will this work with the Cheetah radar interface?? Or will two(2) unit be required to operate the extreme M-67 ? My Plan is to mount this system on a Highlander Suv, any insights or thought you would like to offer?

    Thanks for your time!

Every other weekend (when LEOs are very active) I drive from Macon, GA to Savannah, GA. I currently own a Beltronics RX65 based on your comments about it and I love it by the way. I’m looking to give the RX65 to my wife and upgrade for myself. How much better (if at all) is the Escort Redline over the Beltronics STI Driver/Magnum?

I up graded to the REDLINE, about a year ago. This is a whole new ball game. I drive the speed limit around town and in ”traffic”. But show me a nice curvy highway or an open freeway, and zoom zoom.
Drive sensibly, drive quickly, pay attention and get a REDLINE, for ”drivers”.

Did you find this review helpful? Yes   No

    • It may be a little bit better on top for radar but nothing you would notice on Radar. For laser mounting it low will give you a better chance at detecting laser.

    Hello Roy.

I live in Brazil and intend to buy a radar to use here. I’m looking for one that’s is totally undetectable, as they are illegal here (the law isn’t clear on that point, but allows this interpretation, and I don’t wanna botter with that). As I don’t know which radar band they are using here, and they don’t inform that, I think interesting to buy someone that also detects KU band. (unless you have some information telling me that the police don’t use the KU band here).
Saying all that, Which radar detector do you think it’s the best for my case?
At first I consider to buy a redline, but I found it doesn’t detect KU band.

    Best Regards,

    Guilherme

First- I love the site and this blog is great!

Second- I have a motorcycle and regularly go on multiple day expeditions through the mountains. Just bought a Blinder M-27 and am considering adding an invisible (to Spectre IV+) radar detector. The plan is to incorporate that detector and jammer with a VizAlert V2 in helmet display.

Think I’m set on the Magnum or Redline so first question is- where should I mount the detector?
Common sense says to go somewhere behind the plastic windscreen but am unsure as to whether I should cut out a hole for it.

Third- the VizAlert V2 display has an engine running sensor that hooks up serial to their device and powers the m-27 and wireless display only when the engine is running.

Any thoughts on the best way to power the radar detector on the bike? My first attempt will be to run on the same circuit as the other devices but want to have options in event the power draw is too much for the circuit.

    Fourth- THANKS ROY!!!

I personally think it is just time for an upgrade. Most of my driving is rural highway to work that is patrolled by County Sherriff. Also long highway trips to visit family in Indiana. ****On Redline, Jammers, CHP, Valentine 1, and TPX 2.0 issues*****
I have been perusing your site on / off for years. While I respect that you have to be careful not to step on a companies product, it is VERY obvious you are not really giving us the full scoop; soft shoeing it routinely. For example, you fail to test the Redline side by side with for example, the TPX in a real video test. I haven’t seen to many from you on any models, yet Youtube is filled with on dash-shootouts. So others can test this way, but you cannot?
ME as a Consumer/ Speeder: If Walmart made a detector that was superior, I’d buy it. I am brand blind. From TV’s to bikes, whomever makes the best, that year, I’m all over it.

Very few, including Valentine, compete on any level with Escort, but deciphering that from your site isn’t there. In virtually every real-world on dash test, Escort is the best dash unit $ can buy. Valentine is a very close 2nd. This truth is not obvious from your site, to me, and I am LOOKING for that info.
The Laser Jammer info is incredible. It’s great you want to sell stuff for a living, but if you were honest with us, a jammer in most scenarios is absolutely the stupidest thing you can do. That you do not tell people what is REALLY going to happen when the cop has no reading, is plain unprofessional. I have known hardcore users that have used everything produced in the last 20 years. Jammers especially in CA, are a GIANT no-no. You WILL be pulled over; your bike / car WILL be torn apart until they find the thing. What might have been a simple ticket or a “warning” from LEO, is now sure to be something entirely different. Wait till LEO tells the Judge what you were up to. No traffic school, no mercy, and you have all but guaranteed LEO will show up on your court date. In Canyon driving, likely you will be the first one coming out of a pack or you may be 100% alone. Guess what a no reading means now? They KNOW what you are doing; it’s only you they have to contend with. You are the only A Hole on the scene, and LEO’s gone is blank. Give us a break here. You are the dominant source on the web. You are doing a big disservice to us out here in real world land.
I looked into the TPX on a lot of other sites because of the for-bike aspect of the unit, for our suped up Yamaha R1’s. Clutchless race / speed shifters, fuel mgmt systems, re-valved suspension, etc. In 99% of the scenarios, you will be the 1st and only bike rocketing down that straightaway, or coming out of a curve. If you speed, even in a Chevy GEO, chances are, you are the most obvious in the pack. …That LEO’s Laser suddenly goes blank on your stand-out driving? You ARE dead meat. Period.
In review, for serious driving, you have to spend the $ on a Redline / Valentine with audio AND visual options on a bike, or you’re again, dead meat. A $300 detector is nearly as useless except on long flat terrain, as not having one at all. I’ve had them all. It’s a fact.
You should tell people that unless they are going to shell out serious $, a lesser unit than those 2 as mentioned, is likely to cost them a ticket & points on their driving record.
The Redline in real world canyon and hilly terrain barely alerts you in time. It does give a person with quick reflexes enough in general. I can’t imagine a Whistler or a 9500 because they are in fact slower. If the Redline barely gets it done, another, lesser unit, is almost a guaranteed ticket.
Also, in CA, ALL CHP cars have front & rear radar on, at almost all times. Most people do not know about rear facing. I see very little info on this, on your site. it should, be pounded down people’s throats until they get it.
It is pretty obvious you are watering down info and reviews for sales. I don’t think that’s right.
My Redline, after a slew of other detectors over the last 18 years, has saved me on average, 2 tickets PER WEEK in SoCal. Almost all of this is due to CHP rear facing.
I know you can do better. It is obvious you have honed your site over the years. If you stand back and listen to your video reviews, it is obvious from an unbiased stand point you are watering the info down in order not to incur the wrath of the companies that you are reviewing.
    Perhaps a whole section entitled,
“For The Dedicated Speed demon: The Holly Grail in Radar Jammer & Detector Info.” A by-line header like this so everyone can see it. I’d rather sell a lot more expensive unit that work, than cheaper ones that don’t. But that’s just me.

    • T,

First off thank you for your post but I feel that I need to address a few misconceptions.

First I do not sell ANYTHING from RadarDetector.org or any other site. It is strictly a review website based upon my background and experience in the radar detector industry.

I do have affiliate links that do go to other sites such as RadarBusters, but that is NOT my site.

Second, I do have reviews of the Valentine One on the site and in my buyer’s guide.

And I do agree with you that Escort is #1, but that Beltronics is #2 and Valentine #3.

As I do not sell radar detectors for a living, I certainly do not have the time or resources to test every radar detector side by side in videos as I have a regular job just like you that I need to attend to.

We do test them individually during our yearly shootouts and that information is in our buyer’s guide.

As far as you saying that having a laser jammer is stupid, if you just leave it on and wiz by the officer I would agree. However this is not how you use a laser jammer.

We cover the dos and not to dos of owning a laser jammer here: http://www.radardetector.org/radar-detector-info/radar-detector-users-guide/

Also if you would have taken the time to review our articles, eBooks, test results and other FREE information I pretty much cover all the information you say that I don’t.

Here are some links incase you missed them:

I have owned almost every detector a man can buy since back in the 70’s. Back then Radio Shack was the most popular place to buy a detector. Then along came Escort. Knock on wood the only problems I’ve had with an Escort detector was theives. Every detector that I have purchased in the past 25 years was to replace the one that was stolen from my car. I now have a Redline that I purchased a little over a years ago to replace the 8500 that was lifted from my glove box while at a repair facility. The 8500 was a great detector when compared to others. Actually it was the best I’d ever owned. Then I bought a Redline. It just never ever fails to detect. If on/off radar is being utilized I’d suggest keeeping it under 25mph over the speed limit. It’s a little tough to break more than this and be detected. I use it on military bases where detectors are prohibited and military police are tough(they write tickets for 3 & 4 mph over) The Red Line just escapes them on “Full Dark Mode” but they never escape me.
There are only two cons with the RedLine detector:
    1. It sometimes will register radar so far out that you’ll increase your speed before encountering the source. For this, I never mute it on the highway unless I know the source ie drug store falses. It will litterly detect k & ka signals 10 minutes away if they are running steady on. Other wise, shut it down and watch your co-runners get pulled.
    2. In town running on auto/no X it will detect k signals like you can’t imagine from drug, grocery & dept stores. Not that they are on every corner but there are a lot of them in the city.I’m told that this is from the automatic entrance doors. Ka can be detected within a couple of blocks of you from the right and left not just front and rear.
Bottom line, if you run the highway you absolutely will not be disappointed in the Redline. You can absolutely say that having a RedLine in your auto is better than the officer having radar. You will always know where he is.

Hi Roy – Thanks to your website and reviews I bought my Redline about 13 months ago and I have not regretted it! My only regret is I wish I bought one sooner! A question for you… from what I’ve read, turning on POP detection decreases the range/effectiveness of my redline. For fun, I turned it on and started receiving a few POP detections whilst traveling the highways of NYS. Mainly, western new york (Rochester, Buffalo). My question to you is.. well two.. 1) How much degradation of efficiency / range is there (if any) by enabling pop detection? and 2) Is there such thing is a false POP detection? I’ve gotten POP detections and there were no police around… Thanks!

I am running this direct wire from a BlendMount, I keep the detector pretty level (in case detector positioning and angle are factors here)

Also, I don’t have the same range as some people do – is this a flat ground sort of problem? or should I be worried about the integrity of my detector?

    • Nevada is the only state I know that has a contract with MPH, so unless you’re driving there disable POP.
Just think of it this way “POP is POOP” no one really uses it much anymore…

Testing the range is hard unless you have another detector you can use in a closed test course. You should be getting around 7X the range of the police radar gun with the Redline

I will leave it disabled. I drive the highways of Rochester, NY primarily. So I mostly deal with NYSP, Monroe County Sheriffs and then local municipalities.

I have had instances where the range is astonishing and instances where it is mediocre. On top of that, there are a few known false alerts I drive by daily that sometimes get picked up and sometimes don’t (automatic doors and grocery stores and hotels). Does weather play a role in range? (ie. Does humidity affect performance?). Also, am I doing myself a disservice by using the BlendMount? (http://tinyurl.com/9r3z35k)

I have own the redline for over a year paired with laser veil on a small city car Chery Face GLX and It has worked awesome over the Atacama Desert. There was one time a patrol car was coming towards me on a curvy downhill section and I had a K band detection several miles away, simply awesome. Other time another patrol car coming towards me from an uphill and i had just the 15 second warning i needed to slow down, tough terrain and i,m pretty sure another rd would have failed in that tough situation. Bottom line is, i love the redlline and i use it every day. Laser detection is awesome beating the Stalker, pro laser 3 and the traffipatrol xr. Veil only works if you get the earliest laser detection possible and in this case the redline is simply extremely powerful. Some will love the v1 in this matter and I agree laser detection is very good but for my needs it has worked amazingly good. I previously owned a cobra rd and i was sick of it for the constant falses all the time. I love the filtering the redline applies and even though it still beeps to malls and door openers it is not annoying at all.

The bad part is that the paint is pealing off the redline and it sucks! Looks like a bad case of sun burn but the electronics is working just as new.

Recommended 100%. No one will regret to have this tank over the dashboard.

    Radar Roy!

Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into your website. Because of you, I purchased an Escort Redline. I am blow away by the performance! I commute 200 miles a day and within the first week, it saved me three times from a ticket. And while I do agree that it might have a few false alarms, pair it with the EscortLive service, and block them out. Fantastic!

In fact, I am so impressed with the performance, I would like to upgrade to an installed version. Unfortunately, I live in California, so laser jammers are out, so I appreciate the tip on Escorts 8500ci, and Beltronics STiR options. I also noticed Beltronics has a detector called RX45. Do you have any thoughts as to where this fits into the performance between the Redline and 8500ci?

And lastly, a question about mounting locations. My Redline is driving me crazy, even though I have it installed using a Blendmount. Do you know if using the visor clip for the Redline will diminish performance? And I noticed that the Redline has “rear” detectors. Do they and also the front of the detector have to have line of sight from my rearview mirror to work properly? Or can I mount it behind the mirror without impairing performance? If I do purchase the installed 8500ci, does the radar receiver have to have a clear line of sight from the grille or can I mount it in my overhead compartment, facing front, but behind my headliner?

Again, thank you for your help. Your a real guy, with real solutions, just not one of those “sell the sizzle, not the steak” kind of salesmen. Cool. Too bad we cannot set up a 501(c)(3) (nonprofit) for you so we could make contributions to you for educational purposes!

The RX45 is a very low end unit that I would not recommend. Bel’s good units start out at the Bel Pro 300 series which is based on the 8500 X50 platform and moves up. Yes, you can use the visor clip and the “rear” facing port is for laser only, not radar. The radar antenna is 360 so you don’t need a port for that

As far as laser jammers, check out the Blinder HP-905 as it can be easily switched to a “parking sensor” which is legal

      Drive safe and smart…

I just purchased a Redline and have several questions. Is the only rear detection capability for laser (LIDAR)? Also, if the optional visor clip is used, does the rear port become useless since it’s buried in the visor and not open?

Hey Radar Roy, I have the Redline and I get a lot of K band alerts while driving on the interstate here in NC. I was wondering how do I know what is legit and what is a trucker? Also could you tell me what are the best settings to set my Redline too?
