Instant On Radar Test and Review
Are you considering investing in a radar detector that you maybe using on the highway?
If you are then you will want to watch this video where we test four different radar detectors to test their effectiveness against instant on radar using a Stalker ATR handheld Ka radar gun.
Instant on radar enables an officer to wait till he has a speeder within target range before he activates his radar gun.
Because of this you need to have three things to defeat this type of enforcement.
- Someone we call a rabbit who driving in front of you that the officer would suspect is speeding, causing him to activate his radar gun.
- A detector that has long-range performance.
- A detector that is able to detect short bursts of radar, 4 seconds or less.
Now during this video you will witness first hand the effectiveness of four radar detectors.
The Passport Max2 which we rate as a 5-star radar detector, best suited for both highway and city use.
The Escort Redline, we rate as a 4-star radar detector, best suited for highway use.
The Passport, we rate as a 3-star radar detector, best suited for city use.
And the Uniden LRD-950 we rate as a 2-star radar detector, which we feel are not very effective against instant on radar.
This test was done on the Carefree Highway just outside of Morristown Arizona and we feature the Escort Redline in each of these tests as its rated as the best highway detector for these types of instant on ambushes and also because of its M3 antenna design which enables the detector to be stealth and not interfere with the performance of the other radar detectors used during this test.
As you just witnessed during this video the Escort Redline is the clear winner in this test, followed by the Passport Max which took a few seconds to respond to the instant on alert at 8440 feet.
The reason for this lag time is attributed to the filtering of the Max2, which enables it to filter out those pesky false alerts.
In third place we had the Passport, which was able to capture its first instant on Ka band alert at 5280 feet, which is just over a mile away.
Then in last place we had the Uniden LRD950, which again is classified as a two star detector and all the radar detectors in this category would also have a difficult time in responding to an instant on radar speed trap as demonstrated in this video.
Now on the top of this video is a banner and if you click on it, it will take you to our other radar detector reviews on our website Radarbusters.com.

Would the 8500 x50 perform similarly to the passport in this test?
It has the same M4 antenna but not the same firmware John, so no. I would say that the 8500×50 would lag behind just a notch
Hello Roy,
How would the 9500ci test out??
Love ur reviews.
Thx
would perform the same as the STiR Plus
