Cops Vs. Speeders; How Radar and Laser Jammers Work
This past week Rex Roy, Editor, interviewed us for AOL Autos regarding their AOL Newsletter, which features Radar Detectors, and Jammers for their January featured story.
In this article Rex first discusses radar jammers and the federal laws, which carry a $50,000 fine and five years in prison for anyone that manufactures, sells, distributes and/or uses such a device.
Rex then discusses the devices sold by Rocky Mountain Radar and independent tests performed by Speed Measurement Laboratories, which shows that the RMR products are as effective as “having an empty plastic box on your dashboard”.
In the next part of Rex’s article he discusses Laser Jammers and the fact that there are no federal laws prohibiting their use and how they are effective in jamming police lidar guns.
Rex’s article is a must read for anyone that is interested in learning some basic information regarding the differences in radar and laser jamming and what devices are available in the marketplace.

Interesting article. I have an LEO friend & a few years back he let us meet him where he had set up a speed trap so we could watch. He mentioned that cars without a front plate are (according to him) 90-95% less likely to get a reading on the laser gun. That although they can still sometimes get a reflection off of your headlights, it is much harder because of their irregular shape. I don’t know if this is true but when he let us clock people with the laser gun, it was definitely harder getting a reading when they didn’t have a plate. So, even though we are required to have a front plate here, I took mine off ever since (I’ve only been given a warning ticket once and even if I did get a ticket, a $10 no-plate ticket is better than a $300+ speeding ticket). And I must say that there has been numerous times where my Escort has lit up with LASER while doing well over the limit (+20 over PSL), and it just seems like they just keep shooting me and keep shooting me because they aren’t getting a reading on me (if I remember right when I got to shoot the laser gun, once it locked in a speed it stopped emitting?) so it seems like if they got a reading on me the RD would silence until they release and re-shoot which would then re-alert the RD?!? Anyway, just my two cents worth…not sure if I’m right or not but what does it hurt to try and remove your front plate (unless it’s illegal where you live).
BTW…my friend also brought along his Rocky Mountain Radar “jammer” to test and we can concur that they are useless.
Whether a LEO is aiming at your headlights or license plate, a speed can be acquired very quickly. I own a police lidar gun (LTI Truspeed) and have noticed that I can acquire a vehicle’s speed in as little as 0.33 seconds (up to 0.5 seconds depending on car color/reflectivity) whether I am aiming at a vehicle’s plate or headlights.
I have a car without front plates and my headlights are hidden. Is this an advantage?
Yes, you have less of a reflective area for laser
Great article! I have an LI Quad, 900ix setup and have a bast here in MN so far 🙂
