Frequently Asked Questions about the Cheetah C50 GPS
- How easy is it to update the C50’s database and how often do they update the database? The Cheetah is very easy to update, just install the program on your computer, download the updates and plug a USB cable into the Cheetah C50. The Cheetah database is updated weekly.
Potential Issues with the Cheetah C50 GPS Camera Locator
- As the Cheetah C50 is a GPS device, it must be able to see the sky to receive signals from GPS satellites. Therefore it should be mounted on either the dash or windshield for optimal performance.
My Bottom Line Recommendation for the Cheetah Camera Locator
States and municipalities have discovered a new cash cow, photo enforcement cameras. These automated speed cameras are everywhere today snapping our photo and mailing costly citations to our home and businesses.
Therefore you need the protection of GPS based warning device to alert you of photo enforcement cameras and the Cheetah System is one that I recommend highly!
This Based upon my 20 years in law enforcement as a certified police radar instructor and 15 years being involved in the speed counter measurement industry.

his little package is great. It’s small and easy to move between vehicles. The alerts are always timely. You set the alert timing. I have received very few false alerts- all of them occurring when driving under roads that have red light camera enforcement intersections in close proximity and on parallel roads that are very close to photo enforcement areas. Users of the C50 can advise Cheetah of the falsing areas through their website, and new software versions from the Trinity database are available regularly for subscribers. You will want the database subscription to stay current on new photo locations.
Will units like this set off a RDD? So if it is coupled with a Beltronics STI will it jeopardize its stealth capabilities ????
No, will not set off a radar detector nor jeopardize the stealth of your STI
So which is better…the Cheetah C50 or the Cheetah GPS Mirror?
The performance is the same, I use the mirror just because of the extended viewing range
Roy’s video review of the C50 at sema 2008 is really the c100
How does the Trinity database compare to the Trapster database?
The Trinity is much more accurate, I have seen allot of false locations with Trapsters
Have you tested the Whistler RLC-100 or RLC-250?
How does the Trinity compare to the Verilight database?
Also have you tested the Escort SC55?
Is the Defender database the same as Trinity?
Thanks!
Not yet, waiting hoping to get one in the next couple weeks
Roy:
What is your opinion on the Navalert now?
Mine does not consistently pick up satellites anymore and the Vista Driver and or Windows drivers do not work to allow me to download there databases. No MAC platform either. Gives me a messege: Error Reboot Computer. Their support is not good either. E-mailed a lot over a 2 month period to them for remediation and I just am not impressed. Wanted another 60 bucks to change the board? What? Not! Already spent $200.00 originally I think on it when it came out.
What do you recommend for red light/speed and mobile cameras. I am in Columbus Ohio. Have Escort 8500, navalet ( Useless), and now an LI. Thanks.
Rich
You’re the 1st person I have heard that has a problem with the NavAlert, As a Mac user myself I am frustrated about the drivers but also run into the exact same problems with drivers from Garmin. What would I recommend, have you considered the 95009x?
Is heat rejecting glass, green glass, metallic glass, tint, athermic glass, etc., an issue for having properly functioning Navalert, Cheetah C50, C100, radar detectors or other devices? Any testing ever been done on this? Thanks. Just a thought or other variable to question.
Rich
Metallic Glass does cause problems with radar detectors so I would assume that it would also block the RF for the GPS. If you have one of those windshields where you have a cut out for a toll transponder, this would be an indication that you will have problems
Roy:
I have to tell you I received my C50 Speed Cheetah last week and within five minutes of plugging it in, picked up four satellites, locked and has been working great every since. In comparing it to the Navalert, Speed Cheetah rules hands down. Navalert is very spotting in picking up the satellites. Thought maybe it was the glass: Not! I wish the Trinity Database was easier to use in terms of Log in process/download program. Thanks again.
Rich
Would this be recommended for driving in the state of Illinois where they are installing numerous speed cameras and mobile units?
Yes, this would work fine as a speed camera device
Will the cheetah have any effect on the operational capabilities of my vehicles factory installed dashboard navigation system?
Never heard of a problem
